Case Study: Pest Control Company Makes Marketing Noise With Smartphone Application Development

Tucson, AZ – When it comes to pest control-related apps one of the earliest adaptors – and a company still at the forefront – is Tucson, Ariz.-based Arizona Pest Control.

In 2011, the company launched one of the first-ever pest identification apps called AZPest.com Pest ID Pro. The app helped consumers identify bugs and insects they came across in their home or business. Users simply uploaded a photo of the pest they wanted to identify to the app and an Arizona Pest Control-trained entomologist would ID the insect within a 24-48 hours. Updates in 2012 included an entire pest gallery for people to use to quickly identify pests, incorporation of the company’s blog, http://www.azpest.com/blog, and a version built specifically for iPad users.

Caleb Tennenbaum, Founder for Marketing For The Future, LLC, an Interactive marketing firm, recently announced that the app has been re-launched as the Pest Identifier, sponsored by Arizona Pest Control.

Users can download the app for free from iTunes at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pest-identifier/id675370471?ls=1&mt=8. From there, they will need to purchase bug ID credits (an in-app purchase) at a cost of $4.99 – good for one bug submission. (The service remains free of charge to Arizona Pest Control customers). Tennenbaum said the new app includes all of the features and functions as the old app; however, functionality has been improved to streamline the identification process for entomologists. One of the entomologists on staff assisting with identification is Carl Olson, former insect curator at the University of Arizona. “He is one of the best insect curators in the world. It’s hard to put a price tag on that kind of knowledge,” Tennenbaum said.

The app gets about 2-3 bug submissions per day and so far there have been a few rare submissions, such as this devil horned caterpillar pictured below.

Tennenbaum explained Some benefits of the APP for the Tucson based, Arizona Pest Control:

  • Customers can easily access there account to pay bills and manage account history.
  • Customers can easily send your company pictures of bugs and insects they may see around  their homes or business.
  • Users can browse the pest gallery within the APP to see if they can identify their insect prior to sending in an image to be identified by a professional
  • The app has also received a great response from local media outlets and news stations in Tucson which created exposure for this small pest control company that is hard to put a price tag on.

Tennenbaum said Arizona Pest Control is trying to expand the app’s user base and promote it not only to companies, homeowners and entomologists – but to insect enthusiasts, and PCO’s.

Since the app was launched in the Apple store in August it has received more than 1500 downloads worldwide from all over the world from the Philippines to Canada.

Pest Identifier is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad. Requires iOS 6.1 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.

4 items to look at when hiring a company for social media marketing management

Navigating the social media world in today’s business environment can be a tall task for many companies. There are many reasons businesses refuse to get more involved in the social media marketing landscape. The truth of the matter is, the longer you put off your social media marketing then the worse off you are going to be in the long run. Everyone that has ever been a part of any company knows one of the biggest advantages your company can gain is reaching the consumer before the competitor. Social media has made it extremely easy to reach your exact target market, so the key is to get to them before the competition does. If you are a company that has not yet taken advantage of the social media marketing opportunity it may be time to give social media another look as a plausible revenue generator. If your company is shopping around for a marketing firm to manage social media accounts look at these 4 items to make sure you are going with a company that knows what they are doing. With so many self-proclaimed “social media experts” it can be tricky to separate the pretenders from the contenders especially if you have little to no experience.Social Media Marketing

  • Look at the social media presence of the company you are going to hire

This is my favorite indicator to use to separate the pretenders from the contenders. Look at the company’s social media presence to see what their activity is like. Checkout their Facebook page, their Twitter account, LinkedIn profile, etc .etc. chances are if their last company update was in 2010 than they won’t be the ideal company to be updating your organizations social accounts either.  If they can’t do it for their own company, how are they going to do it for yours?

  • Make sure the company has a good reputation

Visit their website and get some references to talk with. If they have any clientele listed on the website give them a call and talk to them about their success, failures, and everything in between. This is a more effective route then asking for references because what company is going to give you a reference to company that isn’t currently happy?

  • Ask the company if they would ever tweet about controversial topics

In my personal opinion there is nothing worse than the social media management company that is trying to push their political ideology onto others at the expense of their clients. Believe it or not this actually happens all the time in the social media world. Ask the company you are interviewing how they feel about political or religious updates. The general rule of thumb in social media management is if it’s controversial in any way then stay away from the topic as a whole. If you are interviewing a company that has high praise for a group like Westboro Baptist Church hopefully that will raise the red flag to you/the decision maker.

  • Make sure the company has some sort of history/ track record with social media marketing

Hiring the social media Management Company with less than one year experience may never be a good idea. Get a feel for how long the company has been involved in social media. If they just opened up their social media marketing services last week then it may be wise to continue to look for a firm with a concrete history in social media management. Typically anything over 3 years is acceptable and companies with over 5 years of experience are phenomenal.

4 steps to get More Twitter Followers

Step 1: Listen. Opening up your ears and listening to what the people you follow are saying is a great way to engage, and get more people to follow you. Generally speaking if you are listening and responding to people’s tweets it will create a snowballing effect. Their follower will recognize this and want to follow you also. Listening is a great way to get your Twitter follower count up.

Step 2: Engage. “Tweople” want to be engaged with on a regular basis. Whether you are engaging them through DM’s, RT’s, or replies when you are actively engaging your Twitter audience the results will come in the form of followers and sales. The more you engage, the better off your overall marketing strategy will be.

Step 3: Introduce yourself. Create a way for new followers to learn more about you. For every new follower I get, I always send them a welcome message and invite them to look at my website to let me know their thoughts. It’s an easy step that will translate into more followers and more business for your company.

Step 4: Create compelling content. People on Twitter want to follow users that are constantly putting out new content and sharing the best information from around the web. The more interesting content you can produce or share with your follower, the more followers you will get. What exactly is “interesting” content? Let your followers decide for you, and run with it. If certain Tweets get you 100 RT’s and others get you 0 it should give you a good idea of what your followers want to see.

Utilizing the 4 steps that are mentioned above will not only get you more followers on Twitter, but it will get you more business. Please be sure to Follow us on Twitter at @mktg4thefuture and let us know how you like to gain more followers in the comments section below.
